Microsoft confirms to close Microsoft 365/Azure/Excel and other software and Internet services in Russia at the end of the month.
According to the further requirements of the European Union, several US and EU companies will stop providing Internet services in Russia. In December 2023, the twelfth round of sanctions against Russia was taken. Microsoft, Amazon, and Google will no longer be able to provide some data analytics services to Russian customers.
The main products that Microsoft will close are PowerBI and Dynamics 365 CRM, but now there is more news that a large number of Microsoft cloud services will suspend services to enterprises and institutions in Russia, and individual users are currently not affected.
After communication with Microsoft, the Russian local software solution provider Softline, Microsoft agreed to “suspend services” until the end of March, and the originally scheduled start date of implementation was March 20.
In fact, the services to be closed cover a large number of core cloud services of Microsoft:
Microsoft Azure: A cloud platform for computing, analysis, storage, and network services under Microsoft
Microsoft 365: Includes Office suites, cloud services, and security, providing productivity and collaboration
Excel: A spreadsheet application (client and web version) for data analysis, visualization, and comprehensive calculation
OneDrive: Cloud storage service provided by Microsoft to users, supporting synchronization and sharing, etc.
Microsoft Teams: Enterprise online communication and collaboration software
Dynamics 365: ERP and CRM customer management services provided by Microsoft
Power BI: Business analysis tools for data visualization and smart decision-making
SQL Server: SQL database server product provided by Microsoft
Visual Studio: A cross-multi-language integrated development environment provided for developers
SharePoint: A platform for project and document management and collaboration
Power Automate: Cross-application automation tools
Intune: Endpoint management solution for secure management of mobile devices and applications
Microsoft said that the license keys of the above products will expire. However, first of all, Microsoft’s main service suspension is for Russian enterprises, so Russian individual users can still use the above products; secondly, Microsoft has released an industry restriction guide, that is, enterprises in the above industries cannot use the above products.
Industry restrictions include companies and institutions in the fields of architecture, design, construction, manufacturing, media, education and entertainment, building information modeling, computer-aided design, and computer-aided manufacturing.
AWS platforms under Amazon and GCP platforms under Google have also taken similar measures to meet the sanctions regulations of the European Union. Among them, Amazon has already notified its Russian customers by email.
